Mother Sheehan vs. Nancy Pelost

The anticipated announcement from Cindy Sheehan that she is officially entering the race to challenge Her Speakerness Nancy Pelosi for the California Eighth District U. S. House of Representatives seat came August 9, 2007.

Cindy Sheehan, The Absolute Moral Authority^TM on the Iraq War, tearfully announced her candidacy, citing her son, Casey, as her inspiration. Sheehan had threatened to throw her hat in the ring against Pelosi if Her Speakerness did not move to impeach President Bush.

SAN FRANCISCO — A tearful Cindy Sheehan cited her son, killed in Iraq, as her inspiration as she announced her candidacy Thursday for the U.S. House against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Sheehan said last month she intended to run against Pelosi, D-Calif., if the San Francisco congresswoman didn't move to impeach President Bush by July 23.

Sheehan said Thursday that Pelosi had "protected the status quo" of the corporate elite and had lost touch with people in her district, most of whom, she asserted, want American troops out of Iraq.

In every democrat cloud, there is a silver liberal lining. The New York Times headlines a column explaining how Sheehan's candidacy can help Pelosi:

The Times argument goes that by having a truly liberal anti-war activist challenging SanFranNan, it will make her look less liberal and blunt the GOP's portrayal of her as a far left San Francisco liberal.

Not necessarily true. Nancy Pelosi will still be a San Francisco ultra-liberal; she'll just be challenged by a far left, anti-war whackjob. It will still be easy to portray Pelosi as a San Francisco liberal, we'll just have her lack of accomplishments as House Speaker to add to the campaign to defeat her and the democrat lead House.

AP reports that Cindy Sheehan is threatening to challenge Nancy Pelosi for the Eighth Congressional District seat if Her Speakerness doesn't bring impeachment proceedings against President Bush by July 23rd.

Sheehan said she will run against the San Francisco Democrat in 2008 as an independent if Pelosi does not seek by July 23 to impeach Bush.

Sheehan made similar noises prior to the 2006 elections, saying she would challenge Dianne Feinstein if she didn't filibuster Judge Alito's Supreme Court nomination.

This development is funny. As much as I would revel in SanFranNan being defeated, even if it's by radical liberal, Sheehan is not the person to do it. Despite most Republican's strong dislike for Pelosi, the chances of her being unseated in her district are slim to none. She won in 2006 with 80% of the vote (pdf warning).

Face it, Mother Sheehan is a walking, talking disaster. She can barely string two coherent sentences together, let alone two ideas. If you've heard her talk without a script or prepared statement, you'll understand this.

During her rise to national prominence in August 2005, Chris Spittle Boy Matthews asked if she was considering a run for Congress. I recall thinking at the time he must have a pretty low threshold for who he thinks should represent us in Congress.

Matthews: "Are you considering running for Congress, Cindy?"
Sheehan: "No, not this time. I'm a one issue person. I know a lot about what's going on in Iraq but I don't know anything about anything else. And I want to focus my energy on bringing the troops home."
Matthews gushed: "Okay. Well, I have to tell you, you sound more informed than most U.S. Congresspeople, so maybe you should run."

Someone should smack Matthews in the chops just for planting the idea in her head.

She can probably count on Medea Benjamin and Code Pink, American Socialist Workers and her good buddy Hugo Chavez for support, but Mother Sheehan doesn't have a prayer of defeating Americ's Mother-in-law, but it should make for good comedy.

Like most radical liberal activists, Cindy Sheehan is nothing more than an attention whore.

Open Mouth, Insert Foot

Looks like Nancy Pelosi just got caught with one foot (if not both feet) stuck in her mouth up to the shinbone.

The [Israeli] Prime Minister's Office issued a rare "clarification" Wednesday that, in gentle diplomatic terms, contradicted US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's statement in Damascus that she had brought a message from Israel about a willingness to engage in peace talks.

According to the statement, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert emphasized in his meeting with Pelosi on Sunday that "although Israel is interested in peace with Syria, that country continues to be part of the Axis of Evil and a force that encourages terror in the entire Middle East."

Olmert, the statement clarified, told Pelosi that Syria's sincerity about a genuine peace with Israel would be judged by its willingness to "cease its support of terror, cease its sponsoring of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad organizations, refrain from providing weapons to Hizbullah and bringing about the destabilizing of Lebanon, cease its support of terror in Iraq, and relinquish the strategic ties it is building with the extremist regime in Iran."

The statement said Olmert had not communicated to Pelosi any change in Israeli policy on Damascus.

If Pelosi had any brains at all, she'd have realized that Olmert's office would immediately correct the errors in her statement. Perhaps she thought they'd be too intimidated by The First Female Speaker of the House of Representatives to contradict her, but even that stretches credibility to the breaking point and possibly beyond... the Israelis have stood up to the Arabs that outnumber them many times over since 1948, why would they buckle to one woman with a swelled head?

Maybe Pelosi is just the sort of person who needs 10 minutes each morning to figure out which shoe goes on which foot.
